Dublin: Hodges and Smith〕 he was appointed Bishop of Limerick on 24 November 1556. In a letter of 12 October 1561, the papal legate Fr David Wolfe SJ described all the bishops in Munster as 'adherents of the Queen'〔 "Calendar of state papers relating to English affairs : preserved principally at Rome in the Vatican archives and library" Rigg, J.M. p49: London, HMSO,1916〕 In 1562 the Lord Lieutenant the Earl of Sussex,appointed to an ecclesiastical commission for enforcing the royal supremacy, 〔Fiants Ire Eliz, No 666〕 said that he had 'by the laws of the realm, forfeited his bishopric'〔Cal.
